Limestone mining is being implemented by fully mechanized opencast mining methods in all the mines under the study. The working pit has been excavated by developing working benches of 9–10 m in height. Each bench is connected with a ramp. Necessary haul roads have been developed all around the benches for approaching the working faces.
The selection of the excavating and haulage equipment to remove the overburden in opencast mining has a significant effect on the profitability of the operation. Thirty-five to fifty percent of the total cost of operating an opencast mine is attributed to excavation costs and 15–20% of the total cost is attributed to haulage costs.
