The present invention is a process to recover precious metals from sulfide ores. It involves chlorinating a mixture of an ore concentrate and salt to form a liquid melt. The salt preferably contains potassium chloride. This chlorination is carried out at a temperature between 300° and 600° C. while stirring. The process converts precious metals in the elemental and sulfide …

Silver is found generally in lead ores, copper ores, and cobalt arsenide ores and is also frequently associated with gold in nature. Most silver is derived as a by-product from ores that are mined and processed to obtain these other metals. Deposits of native (chemically free, or uncombined) silver are also commercially important.

Sulfide ores, which are generally mined from underground and often found in conjunction with copper-bearing ores, contain copper–iron sulfides in association with nickel–iron sulfides. The principal sulfide mineral of nickel is pentlandite [ (NiFe)9 S 8 ]. Nickel is also found to a minor degree in violarite (Ni 2 FeS 4) and pyrrhotite (Fe 7 S 8 ).

Silver (I) sulfide occurs naturally as the minerals acanthite and argentitde, from which they can be extracted by grinding, crushing, and washing the mineral ore. The compound can also be prepared synthetically by passing hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) gas through an aqueous solution of silver nitrate. H 2 S + 2AgNO 3 → Ag 2 S + 2HNO 3 KEY FACTS

and silver recovery using real ores. Materials The synthetic "ores" used were chemical grade mercury and silver sulfide powders from Alfa Aesar. Characterization of the High Se and High Hg ores are found in section 3.1.3.2. Other reagents used include distilled water, sodium hydroxide, and potassium cyanide. Figure 4.2. and silver cyanide.

It is proposed: 1) The affinity between silver and galena-rich ores is only pronounced if antimony and/or bismuth are also present in significant amounts, and 2) The degree of correlation between silver and lead is partly a function of the Ag/Sb+Bi ratio in the ore and increasing with decrease in ratio at least up to Ag/Sb+Bi=1.

ROASTING OF SULFIDE MINERALS In addition to common metals like copper, lead, zinc, and nickel a number of other metals such as antimony, bismuth, cadmium, cobalt, mercury, and molybdenum occur as sulfide minerals. Sulfides are not reduced with the most widely used redu-cing agents, carbon and hydrogen, because the free energy change for the ...

The distribution of silver in connection with the formation of massive sulfide ores is discussed. It is proposed: 1) The affinity between silver and galena-rich ores is only pronounced if antimony and/or bismuth are also present in significant amounts, and 2) The degree of correlation between silver and lead is partly a function of the Ag/Sb+Bi ratio in the ore and increasing with …
